...What I wouldn't give to have someone explain to me why open office resets my formatting. Even after I save the file it, close it, reopen it, check that its okay, then send it out. Poof! The tables randomly disappear.

I really hope that doesn't happen when prospective employers get that. greeeeat

Nooooooo [26 Mar 2009|02:33pm]
Blender Magazine staffers were informed in a meeting this morning that the April issue would be the last for the magazine.

This is a huge blow for the music media world. Blender was introduced as an alternative to Rolling Stone magazine, which is not a music mag in name, but in reality, it was an alternative to all the other music magazines. In its now short history. it was a unique voice amongst the racks of magazines either selling to the highest bidder (Bust + RS, looking at you), strings of rock and 'alternative' magazines trying to outcool one another but pull in the teenage population, and Hip-hop publications. Unlike many of its counterparts, RS being the worst, it did not eliminate women from recent music history (the most basic offenses being continuously not crediting either Yoko or Nico for their parts in the history making discs THE PLASTIC ONO BAND and THE VU & NICO) nor did it forget about women past and present adding their unique voices to the music landscape.

They never forgot that Cristina was one of Ze Records most impressive acts (despite not being the most famous), that without Neneh Cherry, M.I.A. might not exist, and that 'popular' culture often grows straight out of the gutters. Through the packed pages were anecdotes and reporting at the forefront of music. They neither seemed to report excessively on anything new nor did they wait for an artist to emerge before acknowledging them.

I'll miss them, if only for not having something in print to point to and say "Thank God someone took notice!"

RIP Blender!

Thinking about a new zine. [25 Mar 2009|05:58pm]
The one interesting thing about being an 'existentialist' is that you start writing and receive no catharsis. Have I expunged all that there's left? Surely Tyra has taught me that there is always more of your own history to be exploited for public entertainment!

Maybe I need some 'truthiness'.

Se7en feat. Lil Kim - Girls [11 Mar 2009|10:52am]

I immediately forgive Lil Kim for looking like Janet from that Busta Rhymes video. Her last, and best album, The Naked Truth wasn't a hit. The album beforehand boasted the lead single "The Jump Off", but Kim hasn't been a platinum artist in a while. But she's still the biggest name in female rap, if you consider Missy Elliot a hip-hop artist. Hearing some of her new stuff, the immediate popularity of her appearance on Dancing With the Stars (she can actually dance!), it seems like Kim is poised to make a comeback.

Tia, please do not check on me because I am not 2 anymore. Oh, P.S. and please have a dream about giving me a green ipod shuffle for St. Patrick's Day.

Somedays the only thing you need to make you happy is finding out that Candi Staton is still recording. Thanks to Lady Bunny for giving the heads up about her fantastic track with Groove Armada. Popular music has always been filled with troves of artists both gifted and not with beautiful voices and, even then, many of them did not really know how to use them. Today it seems we have significantly less: Christina's warbles have less emotional effect than many of Pink's raspy chords, Mariah's coo less bolstering than one of Lady Gaga's strains. Candi Staton rarely uses the full effect of her range, but her voice can carry a message without fighting it.

Extremely Important Facts About Life...or trashy movies

  • Did you know that the director of Tremors starting shooting the movie just two days after the last episode of Family Ties? I bet he was imagining the Keatons being eaten th eentire time.
  • The face of Rita Repulsa is the same ping-pong slinging actress of the mechanic in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert! There's an epic story so far untold surely between doing Priscilla and then Power Rangers. That woman is a true, international talent!
  • Tori Spelling had her film debut in Troop Beverly Hills! I tell you, that series just never stops giving.
  • On a related note, does anyone remember that Teen Witch had a musical scene and a make out scene that was really more like a sex scene? Scanadal!

Winamp is at least a 1000 times better than itunes. I mean, the skins alone make it magical. Since amazon started its mp3 download store I just like to pretend itunes doesn't exist. Yes, I like cheaper mp3 albums without any of that ridiculous tracking shit. Why yes, I do love that classic albums are featured at significantly lower prices than amazon.

I'm poor but I had to shill out the .99 for Rupaul's new track. Walk. Now Walk. (and what)

Since I seem incapable of holding onto a single thought for longer than a paragraph (and this, as a general rule, is usually true for me), I'm going to utilize a convenient list format! You know, just to ensure you don't expect any actual consistency from me.

  • This is one of those days where I tell myself that, when updating a blog, you ought to have something at least fun to say. Unfortch I kind of don't! Anything of interest fits very nicely into my lovely twitter (twitter.com/scifiextra) via 1 to 2 texts per day. I've been considering using a service like loudtwitter to have it update to this blog. But that might just be the unemployment talking. Stupid economy! I found exactly the job I wanted and I get laid off barely more than a month later. LAWD.

  • As I mentioned in my last post, I was thinking about making my own game and, surprisingly, I followed through! I'm actually waiting for my delicious friend Vixx to do one of her lethal edits, do some tweaks, the FAQ, and some prettying. Then it'll pretty much be ready. I've been taking some possibly dangerous liberties with the standard application form. Maybe it's my years of online rp'ing, but I feel like some conventions are simply that, conventions. Or getting rid of things I just don't like filling out!

  • Whenever I'm out of work I start devouring video games and books. Last time I was out of work I traded in a lot of video games and, foolishly, instead of paying off my library dues (from when I moved and some of my books from there were in storage --don't ask) bought books, I've decided to correct this error. I joined gamefly (intro offer: 12.95 a month!) and am possibly going to borrow money from my father for my library dues (to be safe). Then for $24.00 a month (from gamefly), which is cheaper than a single game, I'll have a seemingly unlimited supply of video games and books and dvds. Go library system! I really wish more online game rental places had intro offers. Or I'd quit gamefly after the first month and go and join another. Cuz I'm cheap like that.

  • It's freaking snowing. Boooooooooo!

This is part of an e-mail I got from my mother this morning:

I was a whale this morning and had a slice of wheat bread with peanut butter after taking ½ hour to eat my 3 boiled eggs. I was still hungry! I’m still hungry now! More signs that my monthly “friend” will be here soon. Damn mother nature! Damn her If I were writing a Hercules or Xena episode I would have all the women of the world uniting against her. It would have to be a Xena episode . I would have Xena having a real bad episode of PMS and she can’t get her tight leather skirt on because she is bloated. She would say to mother nature, You want to see blood? I’ll show you blood and she would slice mother nature into a million bloody pieces!

...and people wonder where I get it from.

Thank you economy, for laying me off exactly as my boss offered to get me licensed and be added to her production team.

In other news, I'm thinking about starting my own game to fill up some free time. Me and my friend have a private rp we've been doing, using characters from various games, and it's been going on for close to two years. Pretty sure I'm going to base it off that 'universe', which could be a fun tie-in for us.

I haven't modded a game in so long. Somehow I think my real-life experience supervising a large group of occasionally rowdy people will lend itself well to this.

Not entirely sure if I want to be talked out of or into doing this. I just couldn't find many games I wanted to join and the ones I did had low populations and slow mod responses.

Nothing is worse than waiting everyday for news that will either make or break you. I could be staring into the face of a brand new, lucrative career that will get me affordable and lovely housing in one of the richest areas of the country...

or I'll be out of a job. Love all those hiring freezes. If anyone wonders why I seem to be crawling up a wall, it's because I'm waiting. - and I hate waiting -

So after a week of going out everyday with friends for hours upon hours, I decided to spend a quiet day and download some music! For the sake of blogging, here's what I got:

Girls Aloud - Out of Control
Kleerup - S/T
Karen Dalton - It's so hard to tell who's going to love you in the evening
Bettye Lavette - selected tracks
Go-Gos - Revenge of the Valley of the Go-Go's/selected tracks
Grace Jones - Hurricane (fabulous!)
Joni Mitchell - Shine (ripped)/ Tribute to Joni Mitchell (worth it for Prince and Bjork alone)
Lily Allen - Its not me its you
Marianne Faitfull - Easy Come Easy Go
Josh Rouse - Nashville

I think that's enough for one day.

Would you believe I had a fanfiction.net profile once upon a time? I thought it was lost forever or deleted. Most of the stories on it had actually been written a year before it was made, but for some reason I decided I wanted some praise and posted them some places and put links up.

And after having success finding a dear friend of mine online, I gave it a go and...

Voila! Proof that I once decided to write FF8 (my favorite final fantasy) and Naruto fanfiction. Writing fanfiction is so easy; you make it light-hearted and romantical and bam! people love it! I'm just bad with, you know, consistency, having time, caring enough to make time, finding places to post the stuff, etc etc.

Although I'm caught up again with the manga. My typing is also faster than ever. With a willing beta to proofread and edit (because I'm lazy). I could probably crank out something above 3,000 words in an hour.

I guess I'm an occassional glutton for compliments!

Have I had time this year to mention how obsessed I am with Christmas? It kills me that my Christmas stuff is all the way in the back of my storage. However, I've made up the lack of my excessive decorations (lots and lots of metallic and sparkle gold) by stamping my own xmas cards. Many of which utilized dinosaur stamps. Note to self: get various size plain santa hat and/or reindeer antler stamps to decorate next year's inappropriate animal (both existing and extinct) stamping.

To show my love for the Greatest + Tackiest time of year (why else would I love it so?) and the TERRIBLE selection of aired holiday classics this year, I'm listing my ten favorite xmas specials )

Currently seeking new IJ friends.

Interest in drag queens, trashy pop culture, and unnecessary violence a plus but not necessary.

Let everyone know: Tell The World )

I'm also starting work tomorrow at a global financial firm in a branch over an hour away from where I'm staying now. I may be more scarce, but work usually increases my productivity, not lowers it. If you see me on AIM @ talklikemonifah, hit me up there; I may not get back to you for ages, but I love getting messages (and that goes to my phone). I should be on all weekend so take advantage of me while you can! I'll probably be in front of my computer, trying to muster up the willpower to study up on mutual funds or stock dividends. Ugh, figures I'd go into the one financial sector (investments and securities) I don't know a crazy amount of useful information on from my time in banking.
